Flow Themes

Flow themes are very much like WordPress themes, you can install, activate, rename, edit, and create themes from scratch. What makes Flow theme different is that you can customize the header, sidebar, footer, styling, and templates by yourself using frontend drag & drop tools. No CSS or PHP coding skills required.

With the traditional WordPress themes, lets say you want to modify the header and post layout, you would have to either modify the PHP templates or create a child theme. With Flow, you can do this on the frontend without creating any child theme or editing any PHP file. Another great feature of Flow theme is that you can export and import themes from one site to another.

A Flow theme consists of:

  • Templates
  • Template Parts
  • Global Styling
  • Custom CSS
  • and theme info such as theme name, description, author, version number

When you switch, import, or export a Flow theme, those data will carry over as well.

To create Flow themes:

  • Go to WP-admin > Themify Flow > Flow Themes
  • Click "Add New"
  • On the Add Theme lightbox:
    • Name = enter name of the theme (required)
    • Description = enter description (optional)
    • Author = theme author (ie. your name)
    • Author Link = this URL will be linked with the author name
    • Version = enter the theme version number so users can keep track of it
    • Screenshot = upload a screenshot of the theme
    • Base Templates & Parts = keep this option checked so it will import the basic required templates and template parts from the Base theme
  • Then click "Add"
  • It will ask you to activate the new theme, click OK to activate it.
  • NEXT:
    • Go to Themify Flow > Templates and you will see a list of the basic required templates
    • You can edit the existing templates or create your own templates (read more about Templates)

  • NOTES:
    • You can not "Add via Import" a theme that has the same name as one of your existing themes. Use "Replace" theme instead.
    • If you have a WordPress multisite and it gives file permission upload error. Go to Network Admin > Settings and add ‘zip’ in "Upload file types" option. This will allow you to upload zip files within WordPress.
    • Alternatively, you can extract the exported theme zip and upload the extracted .xml file instead to import.

To replace existing Flow themes:

  • Go to WP-admin > Themify Flow > Flow Themes
  • Click "Theme Details" of the theme that you want to replace > click "Replace" button and upload the theme zip file exported previously (this will overwrite all templates, template parts, and styling)
